October belongs to the witches, the mystics, and the seekers who have never been afraid of the dark. It is the month when the natural world moves dramatically toward stillness — leaves releasing, light fading, the earth preparing for its long rest. And beneath all of that visible change, something invisible shifts too. The veil between worlds grows thin. The ancestors draw near. And the invitation to go deep becomes impossible to ignore.
Tarot was made for October.
The Energy of October
October is governed by two astrological seasons: Libra (through October 22) and Scorpio (from October 23 onward). This creates a powerful progression — from Libra's call to examine our relationships and find balance, into Scorpio's invitation to dive beneath the surface and confront what lives in the shadow.
Add to this the approach of Samhain on October 31 — the ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of the dark half of the year — and you have a month designed for reflection, release, and transformation.
October's Most Significant Tarot Cards
- Death — ruled by Scorpio; the card of necessary endings and profound transformation
- Justice — ruled by Libra; truth, fairness, and the settling of karmic accounts
- The Moon — the subconscious surfacing as the veil thins; heightened intuition and vivid dreams
- The Tower — sudden revelations breaking through false structures
- The High Priestess — access to hidden knowledge; the mysteries becoming available
- Judgement — the call to rise, awaken, and claim your true self before the year ends
An October Tarot Ritual for Samhain
On or around October 31, create a sacred reading space. Light a black or deep purple candle. Place photographs or mementos of ancestors or loved ones who have passed on your altar. Shuffle your deck with intention, and pull cards for the following spread:
- What my ancestors want me to know — wisdom or message from those who came before
- What I am releasing before the year ends — what is ready to die and be composted
- What I am calling in for the dark half of the year — the seed I am planting in the fertile darkness
- What gift lives in my shadow — the integrated power waiting in what I've been avoiding
- My word or theme for November and December — the guiding energy for closing out the year
Daily October Practice
Each morning of October, pull one card and ask: What is this day asking me to release, and what is it asking me to embrace? Keep a small journal nearby. By Halloween, you'll have thirty days of insight — a map of your own October underworld, and everything you found there.
A Message for October
The darkness is not your enemy. It is the place where seeds wait. It is the place where the work of the whole year is quietly composted into next year's growth. Go into it deliberately. Go into it with your cards in hand and your heart open.
This is the most sacred month of the year. Use it well.
