Celtic Cross Spread
The Celtic Cross is the best-known tarot spread. It uses ten cards to look at a situation from many angles: where you are now, what shapes it, and where it may be heading. It takes a little practice, but it gives a rich, layered picture.
The ten positions
- The present. The heart of the matter.
- The challenge. What crosses you or adds tension.
- The foundation. The root of the situation.
- The recent past. What is moving out of view.
- The crown. Your goals or best hope.
- The near future. What is coming into view.
- You. Your attitude and role in this.
- Your surroundings. The people and influences around you.
- Hopes and fears. What you want and what worries you, which are often linked.
- The outcome. Where the current path may lead if nothing changes.
How to read it
Cards 1 and 2 form the core. Cards 3 to 6 form a cross around it, showing past, future, foundation and goals. Cards 7 to 10 form the staff on the right, covering you, your world, your feelings and a possible outcome. Treat the outcome as a direction, not a fixed fate. You can always make different choices.
