Death Tarot Card Meaning

Death tarot card

Endings, transformation, and renewal

By Marie Mystic

Death Upright Meaning

Death rides forward under a rising sun, and almost never means a literal death. Upright, the card speaks of endings that make room for renewal, transformation and letting go of what has run its course. It asks you to release what no longer fits so something new can begin. The change may feel heavy, but it carries relief inside it.

Death Reversed Meaning

Reversed, Death can suggest resistance to change, clinging to the past or a transition that feels stalled. You may know something needs to end and be unsure how to let it go. Move gently and ask what you are afraid to lose. Transformation often comes more easily once you stop holding on so tightly.

Death Card Combinations

With The Tower, a major change clears the ground for a rebuild. With The Star, renewal follows an ending. Beside the Eight of Cups, walking away is part of the transformation. Next to The Fool, the end of one chapter opens directly into the next.
